Maintenance Tips

Picture
Here are some tips to improve your driving and ownership experience.
Inspect your vehicle on a regular basis!

Always inspect your vehicle as often as you can. If you spot any leaks, try and get a sense of what color the fluids are that may be leaking. Look for uneven tire wear, rust spots, areas where doors seem harder to close than usual, how the paint is holding up, the condition of your headlights and so on. Share your observations with us.
.
Make sure Spare Tire is roadworthy

Flat tires happen. When they do, you want to make sure you have confidence that your spare tire can be put into use. Make sure it's properly inflated and secured. We stock a wide selection of new tires and will be happy to inspect your spare tire if you're concerned. We can often fix leaking tires with new valves or plugs.
Monitor your vehicle's performance

When you're operating your vehicle, make notice of whether your wheels tend to drift to one side or another when you're not turning. This could mean you're due for an alignment. Hitting potholes and other uneven surfaces can have a big impact on your car's alignment. Also, keep alert for noises or extra pedal give when you're applying your brakes. Your brake pads or rotors might be dangerously worn. If you're accelerating and your car doesn't have the peppy response it used to, your fuel system components may need servicing. If your gas mileage seems lower than you expect, it could also mean that your engine needs a tune up. make note of how you think your car is performing and let us know of your potential concerns. We'll be glad to run a diagnostic check on your car.
Don't ignore Check Engine Lights!

When your vehicle displays a Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon indicator light, your engine is trying to tell you that it needs to be looked at. We have the diagnostic tools in our shop to quickly figure out what's triggering these indicator lights. The sooner you get these warning lights looked at, the better your car will be.
Drive Safely

Your vehicle will last longer and operate more efficiently/safely if you drive safely. Avoid accelerating too rapidly from a stop position. Don't wait until the last minute to slam on the brakes as you're approaching a stop light/sign.
Stay current with oil & filter changes

Engine oil. brake fluids, coolant, and other fluids and the filters that they run through are the lifeblood of your engine. Over time, your engine will burn through fluids and the systems that carry and pump these fluids can lose viscosity, trap small dirt and debris particles and other substances. Your car will run much better and operate more efficiently/safely if your fluids and filters are clean and you'll reduce the risk of catastrophic system failure down the road. We only use the highest quality oil, fluids and filters at K & K.
Periodically open the hood and check for leaks or worn belts

When your engine is OFF, it's always a good idea to periodically open your hood and conduct a peripheral review of obvious fluid leaks or instances where belts appear overly worn. Do not ever attempt to carry out these inspections while the engine is running! If you see something that looks like it needs closer inspection, mention it to us. Of course, we routinely check these kinds of things whenever your vehicle is in for service.
Regularly replace your wiper blades

When it's inclement weather, you need to count on the maximum performance of your wiper blades. Replacing worn blades can have an immediate and substantial impact on your ability to operate your vehicle safely. We stock blades for just about any type of vehicle.
Keep Your Headlights Clean

When you wash your car, pay close attention to your headlights. Don't use anything abrasive to clean them, or your car. Carefully dry the lenses and apply a light coat of wax. Remove the wax with a soft chamois type cloth to provide a protective seal barrier. Make sure the angle of your headlight beam is correctly positioned. If you're concerned that they might not be angled correctly, we'll be happy to take a look.
Replace Your Cabin Air Filters

The air that circulates inside your vehicle generally is diffused through a cabin air filter. Over time, these trap dirt and other particles and need to be replaced.  We can easily include replacing yours during your next service visit. And when you're cleaning the inside of your vehicle, keep your dash and carpets clean to avoid contributing more dust and debris to the air circulation systems in your vehicle.
Avoid Topping Off Your Gas Tank After the Auto Shut Off

Although it's tempting to put "just a little more" gas in your tank when the pump auto shut off kicks in, perhaps to round up to an even dollar amount, it's generally not a good idea.  Gas vapors expand and you'll run the risk of overflowing gas spilling onto your exterior body paint surface.
Care for Your Car

Regular washings and periodic detailing will make your car happy in many ways.
Start Your Car Periodically If Not In Use for an Extended Period

If your car isn't going to be used for an extended period of time, consider periodically running it for intervals to keep fluids circulating, seals tight. This will also enable your alternator to keep your battery charge level where it needs to be. Do NOT run your car in closed air environments such as a closed garage or other constricted air flow space.
Don't Wait for Emergencies to Know Where Important Papers Are

It's always a good idea to make sure that important reference papers associate with your car -- such as registration, insurance cards, AAA cards, and owner's manuals -- are safely secured in a location where you can immediately and easily retrieve them. If your glove box isn't as tidy as it should be, consider spending a few moments getting it organized.
Practice What To Do In Emergencies or Breakdowns

If you have other members of your family who operate your vehicle, make sure that they know what to do in the event of an emergency, or an unplanned breakdown. Know who to call, know where your AAA or other roadside assistance card is. Know how to apply brakes when it's slippery because of snow on the ground.  Know how your car handles going over bridges or wet roads. It's always easier to practice and plan when it's not an emergency situation.
